Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, the month when the Holy Quran was revealed. Fasting is considered to be one of the five pillars of Islam, hence people fast during this month. In the course of the day, the fast begins at dawn and ends at sunset with the evening prayer. The meal served to break the fast is known as Iftar, which consists of a variety of traditional dishes.
